Feel the ship come to life

As long as the Batavia is in the water, the ship moves with the wind and the waves. You can feel it beneath your feet. Sometimes you can hear the wood creaking and realise just how big and heavy the ship is. That makes a visit on board different from what it will be like on land later on.

An experience that will soon be gone

Soon, the experience will change forever. On land, the Batavia will stand taller and be more visible from the surrounding area. It will certainly remain impressive. But the gentle rocking, the living wood and the feeling of a ship in the water will never return.

The Batavia remains open, with a few adjustments

The Batavia will remain open to visitors until it is moved. However, we are currently preparing the ship for transport. The outer decks, the upper deck, the forecastle, the merchant’s cabin, the wheelhouse and the galley will remain open whilst the Batavia is moored at the jetty. The gun deck and the soldiers’ deck will be open to visitors this summer holiday, subject to certain restrictions. The hold is already closed.

Come along before the Batavia sets sail

Towards the end of summer 2026, the Batavia will be towed to a dry dock in Amsterdam. There, the ship will be placed on a pontoon and sailed back to Lelystad, where it will be put on dry land. There, the ship will be given a new home on the grounds of Museum Batavialand, as part of the museum’s large-scale refurbishment. It is certain that this will be an exceptional moment in the history of the ship and of Lelystad.
