Those who go hiking in Lelystad soon discover that the new land is full of stories. On the One Day Trail Lelystad Erfgoed en Nationaal Park, a 26-kilometre walk, you will travel through one of the Netherlands' most special national parks and the history of Flevoland in one day. This is no ordinary route, but an experience where nature and heritage surprise you step by step. You have to discover this for yourself.
Start at Toms Beach & Surf
Your day starts relaxed at Toms Beach & Surf, where the smell of coffee and warm apple pie welcomes you. From the sunny terrace, you look out over the water and feel the tranquillity that comes with a long-distance walk. With renewed energy, take your first steps towards the beach and walk on to Gemaal Wortman. This impressive building once pumped the polder dry. The idea that the Zuiderzee used to babble here remains almost unimaginable.
Pioneering stories coming to life
Close to the pumping station is the Historical Barracks, a small mini museum where you can start an interactive show by pressing the doorbell. Here you are taken back to the pioneering past, when men and women worked on a landscape that had only just come into existence. Then you walk onto Working Island, the first piece of Flevoland to surface. Six information boards bring the stories of the workers to life. They literally built a new province. Not far away you will find Club Port Side, a sunny terrace overlooking the marina. A lovely place for a short break from your itinerary.
Along the Markermeer by Nieuw Land National Park
The walk continues along the Markermeer. The sky, water and open horizon really give you the feeling of being away for a while. You then reach the Knardijk, which separates the polders of Eastern and Southern Flevoland. To your right, you see and hear the nature of the Oostvaardersplassen. Here, you might just spot a bald eagle soaring or a group of spoonbills searching for food in the reeds. Oostvaardersplassen, Lepelaarplassen, Marker Wadden and Markermeer together form the unique National Park Nieuw Land, a nature reserve that exists nowhere else in the world in this form.
Lunch with a view and through Hollandse Hout
At the Buitencentrum Oostvaardersplassen you can have lunch overlooking birds and water features. Then walk into the Hollandse Hout. This young forest is rapidly changing. New ditches and renewed paths add variety to the landscape. Among the trees is a shipwreck that recalls the time when the sea had free rein here. It makes it clear how special it is that you are now walking across this new land.
Back to starting point
Finally, you arrive back at Toms Beach & Surf, where your feet come to rest in the sand. From the terrace, you look out over the Bovenwater and the Hollandse Hout you just walked through. A perfect end to an inspiring long-distance walk.
